5-5-5 Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs is a foolproof way to make hard boiled eggs. You will have perfectly cooked eggs that slip out of the shell, every time! No more egg sticking to the shell when it’s time to peel. Hard Boiled Eggs are back on the menu, people!!

I always struggled to get the perfect hard boiled egg. It would either come out over-cooked or the shell wouldn’t peel off without taking part of the egg with it! Can you relate?
I tried all the hard boiled egg methods and none of them seemed to be fool-proof, at one point or another they would all fail. That is until I tried the 5-5-5 method of making hard boiled eggs in the Instant Pot! Perfection!
Yet another reason I SUPER LOVE MY INSTANT POT!

Hard Boiled Eggs with Easy to Peel Shells
The key to getting the shell of your hard boiled egg to simply slide off, not kidding, is the Instant Pot 5-5-5 method:
Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs 5-5-5 Method
- 5 minutes of pressure cooking time
- 5 minutes of natural release time
- 5 minutes in an ice bath
I have made hard boiled eggs this way dozens of times and they come out perfect every time, cooked all the way thru with an easy to peel shell!
How to Make Hard Boiled Eggs in Instant Pot
The 5-5-5 method is so easy that even my husband can do it! Which is saying a lot. He is definitely not a master in the kitchen.
If you passed the Instant Pot water test, then you can make hard boiled eggs. It is actually a great recipe to start with if you are an Instant Pot Beginner.

Add eggs & water to the Instant Pot
Set the trivet that came with your Instant Pot in the bottom of the inner pot. Carefully lay your eggs around the trivet, I usually cook a dozen eggs at a time.

Set to pressure cook and make ice bath.
Set the pot to cook on high pressure, normal heat for 5 minutes. Then do a 5 minute natural release. While they cook, make an ice bath.

Ice bath
Remove the eggs from the pot and set into the ice bath for 5 minutes.

Peel and eat
The eggs will peel so easily now! Snack on them right away or keep them in the fridge for up to a week.
More Eggs, More Time?
You can cook 6 eggs or up to 24 eggs using this 5-5-5 method. You do not need to increase the cooking time when you are increasing (or decreasing) the amount of eggs you are making.
You can also stick with the same amount of water, 1.5 cups works perfect whether you have 12 eggs or 24 eggs. The eggs do not need to be submerged in the water to cook with this method.
You just want to make sure you don’t go past the “fill line” marked on the inside of the Instant Pot stainless steel insert.
What to Make with Hard Boiled Eggs
We love to snack on hard boiled eggs with just a little salt, or you can make these Classic Deviled Eggs. These are also perfect for dying eggs with the kids for Easter.
For a great summer or spring dinner these egg salad sandwiches can’t be beat. Or if you need a killer side dish try this Potato Salad Recipe!

I hope you give Hard Boiled Eggs a try in your Instant Pot.
I had eggs crack while cooking.
Every once in a GREAT while I have had an egg or two crack while cooking in the instant pot. I do believe that some eggs have a thinner shell or weak spots in the shell and are more prone to cracking with the pressure.
If this happens to you possibly try the “low” pressure instead of high pressure. You may want to increase to 6-6-5 to make sure the eggs cook through.
How to Store Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs
You can store your hard boiled eggs peeled or unpeeled. They will keep in the fridge for a week. If you do store them peeled, keep them in an airtight container. Also keep a damp paper towel over top to maintain moisture.

What if you don’t have a trivet to use?
Susie Weinrich says
Definitely works without it too!!
Linda says
Just did a dozen. 11 were softboiled. 1 was hard. Did not peel well either. Followed directions to the T. Not sure what the problem was.
Susie Weinrich says
That definitely should not have happened. I am so sorry. I would love to help you troubleshoot this!
Do you feel like the normal amount of steam came out after the cook time?
1. Is the seal ring on your pot still in tack and working well. A great way to know if it needs to be replaced is when you take it out to wash and put it back in is there “excess” ring that you can’t quite get in place. That means it is stretched out and needs to be replaced.
2. Is there something (food) underneath your ring that is blocking your pot from coming to full pressure? sometimes your pot can be fooled that it is coming to full pressure and will still do a countdown, but when you go to release the pressure it doesn’t seem like there is a lot of steam coming out.
3. Is your pot set to HIGH PRESSURE with NORMAL HEAT… there are usually 2 or 3 pressure settings, and if you had to change it to low for another recipe it may still be on that setting. Or if you changed the heat to low it may still be on that setting.
Would love to have you double check everything and try it again. It is amazing when the egg shells just slip off the eggs and they are perfectly cooked!

As I’m looking to do eggs in the Instant Pot again and I forgot how I did it last time, I need to adjust mine for high altitude as I’m at 8300ft. So, that could be another consideration. Just a thought.
Caroline says
This is the first time I’ve made hard boiled eggs and not been incredibly irritated by how hard they are to peel. All I can say is WOW. The yolk is cooked perfectly. The shell was so easy to remove. And the whole process was so easy. THANK YOU!

I made these hard boiled instant pot eggs and they turned out great! I followed the well given instructions & they turned out as said. It was very easy to crack & peel off the egg shells. Then I tried the deviled egg recipe link off this page and that too is great. The only thing I didn’t use was the hot sauce (Sriracha) only because I didn’t have any, but they tasted good even without that ingredient!

OMG!!! This worked so well, I had about given up on hard boiled eggs. Thank you!!!

Super easy. I listened to the audio, as I’m new to Instant Pot operations.

I love that you listened to the audio!! So glad it helped. Hope you will browse around for some more recipes.

Never going back to the old way of boiling eggs! Couldn’t have been easier and they came out perfectly. I’ve never had eggs peel so easily. Would have given 10 stars if I could have…
Tom says
Easiest way to prepare boiled eggs. They peel easy.
WB says
Perfect every time!
Lydia says
Umm this is a complete and total game changer. My eggs were ALWAYS hard to peel. They would end up looking like a bear mauled them. This method is MAGIC!! Thank you so much for the 5-5-5 method! Easter is tomorrow and now I can bring stress-free hard boiled eggs!!
Erin says
New to this! Can you explain- after the 5 minute cooking time, mine goes to keep warm. Do I leave it on keep warm for 5 minutes or do I cancel the keep warm feature for the next 5 minutes. Repressing the pressure the test of the way and then into an ice bath for 5.
Susie Weinrich says
Absolutely! I know it’s a weird concept full of new terms. After you set your pot to cook on high pressure for 5 minutes and then beeps… let it count back up to 5, this is the natural pressure release time and you don’t have to do anything but watch the time go back up to 5. The “keep warm” light will be illuminated just letting you know that the pressure cook time is up and is now in the natural release or keep warm phase.
Then turn the pressure valve on top to “vent”. After all the pressure is release and you can open the pot take the eggs out and put them in an ice water bath for 5 minutes. Then your eggs are ready!
Please reach out with ANY Instant Pot questions! I love mine and I hope you will love yours too.

This is the most reliable, easy to peel way to make hard boiled eggs. I can drop to 4 minutes when using medium sized eggs.
Shara says
It worked amazing the first time! When I tried to do a second batch they weren’t done. Any tips with time adjusting for a second batch?
Susie Weinrich says
It should work over and over again. I have had instances (with other recipes) where my pot didn’t come to pressure. Did steam release after the 5 min natural release? If not your pot never pressurized.
Tara Gosse says
Perfect. I used the egg setting on mine with the times listed and they were perfect. Shell just slid off and eggs were tender. Thank you so much for this recipe.
Maria says
Did two batches, first batch came out perfectly, the second batch, I did everything exactly the same and the whites were runny. Tried another batch after that and they were perfect again. I have no idea what went wrong.
Susie Weinrich says
I have had times where my seal ring isn’t completely in place and the pot thinks it has come to pressure when it really hasn’t. It will even do a countdown, but when you go to release the pressure hardly any steam comes out. Did that happen on the second go around?
Genevieve says
I must have done something wrong because mine were raw! What a mess!
Susie Weinrich says
Hmmm. I wonder if your pot didn’t come to pressure? I would definitely recommend that you try again. I promise it works!!!!!
Linda says
This recipe is amazing! They come out perfectly every time-so easy to peel. Easiest way to prep your Easter eggs.
